Taylor Swift-Former Girl Scout and Current Role Model

November 18, 2012

Heyyyy Everyone!

A lot of strong women have been involved with the Girl Scouts of America organization since its creation in 1912!
(Photo from: http://www.billboard.com)
Today I would like to talk about one particularly successful young woman who was once involved with our organization-Taylor Swift!

What a fabulous and accomplished lady...

The last time I Blogged about Taylor Swift and Girl Scouts was back in November of 2012, right after Swift's new album "Red" dropped, and when I was talking about awesome women who were previously Girl Scouts! (for the full Blog Post-click here!)

Taylor has been pretty darn popular in the media lately-and has been doing extremely well for herself!
Taylor's latest music video, "Bad Blood," was released May 17, and has already set a record on Vevo for getting over 20.1 million views in its first 24 hours! Check out the full article Here!

Sooooo Tay is pretty awesome.

She really supports people in being themselves, and is always flaunting her individuality

Earlier this year, Swift has called out the media and individuals for their sexist comments, and has embraced the idea of "feminism" fully and positively. Within her music, she has voiced her support for marriage equality and has spoken out against those who criticize who she is and her lifestyle.

Media can be a very powerful tool, and has often been used to bring Swift and others down. Lately, Taylor has been using the media to put her own spin on things and to really make her voice and the voices of her fans heard. (Click here for a few more details about Swift's accomplishments this past year).
She has been a rock for many of her fans, and will often personally respond to their social media messages and letters in order to show her support. Most recently, Swift has responded to a young woman in Massapequa who had posted a message to Swift on Tumblr. The young woman had recently lost her mother to cancer, and expressed to Taylor how much her music means to her and how it has helped her to remain strong when her days are tough. Swift responded, sending hugs and stating:

"I admire and respect your ability to put forth such a sunny, sweet disposition when you've been through something so dark and tragic so recently."

Swift gives so much support back to her fans, and tries to build them up at every opportunity.

So, in her honor, I've put together a short list of my favorite Taylor Swift songs that have great messages!

                                              1. Mean

This song is from Swift's third studio album, Speak Now (2010). This song speaks out against critics and people who pass unnecessary judgment on others. The song encourages people to ignore their bullies and their critics, and to focus on their future goals. The song also speaks about the power of bad karma. The most powerful lyrics are "someday, I'll be living in a big old city, and all you're ever gonna be is mean."

What it means to me:

This song helped me keep up my spirits during my Freshman Year of college. Words can be extremely powerful and hurtful-and I think that this song really captures that idea.

When people are being "mean," I think it is important to take a step back and realize that everyone is facing trials. People who put others down are often being put down themselves. However, at the same time it's important to be able to stand up for yourself and to realize that you were made for bigger and better things. The hurtful things that others say should not define you-you are the only person who can determine your worth. I have learned that the best way to deal with mean, unhappy people is to treat them with kindness. A little kindness can go a long way, and everyone can use a kind word or a compliment. Never be afraid to be nice or to be yourself.

2. Shake it Off

This song is very similar to "Mean" in that it dismisses the statements of bullies and critics. The media, reporters and people in my communications classes are constantly berading Swift for dating so many different people, for going out and for the type of music that she writes.

What it means to me:

You go Taylor! Live your life!
Taylor Swift's choices are her own. She controls her own life, and so I think that this song is an awesome anthem. It encourages people to be themselves, and to do what makes them happy. When we take the words of our critics too seriously and make changes in order to please others, we are not living for ourselves.  This song helped me to realize that in order to make myself happy and to do my best, I had to do my own thing.

                                             3. Ronan

Taylor Swift wrote Ronan to raise money for children and families suffering as a result of childhood cancers. She wrote the song for a little boy who passed away due to neuroblastoma. The song's lyrics were based upon Ronan's mother's blog posts about Ronan and his life. Swift sang the song live in 2012 for Stand Up Against Cancer, giving all proceeds made off of the single's sale to help the fight against cancer. For more information and background on this inspiring song, click here.

4. Fifteen

What it means to me:

Fifteen is a lot about the transition to High School. The song speaks about remaining true to yourself, and valueing your experiences and talents.

She encourages people to realize that they will do greater things in their lives than "dating the boy on the football team."
I think this is an extremely important messages for teens and women of any age to keep in mind-we are more than who we date, and we are more than the assumptions and perceptions of others.

This song goes beyond "dating"-it talks about making new friends, starting high school and learning first hand about life.

                                             5. Change

Great song about looking forward and working towards success. You need to work through the tough times, and enjoy the good ones.

6. Long Live
This is absolutely one of my favorite songs!
"Long Live" was written as a "love song" to Taylor's entire musical/tour team. It's an empowering song about being an underdog, victory, acceptance and joy, with a "big triumphant message of hope."
I remember dancing to this song with my best friend in high school, and singing it while waiting online for the midnight premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. :)

7. Never Grow Up

This song is all about getting older and learning to appreciate what and who you have in your life.
The message? Take things slow and appreciate the now.

8. The Best Day

This song is especially close to my heart. Taylor wrote "The Best Day" for her mother. It's all about their relationship, and how important and beautiful it is to Taylor. I really connect with this song. My mom and I are super close and I feel like this song is a great thank you to mothers and families for all of their hard work and support-through both the good times and the bad <3

Take this Taylor Swift knowledge and channel the positive vibes into your lives! :)

Girl Scouts is #ForEVERYGirl!

Girl Scouts has been incredibly vocal about their inclusivity and support of ALL girls lately. Recently, a friend shared this awesome article with me:

#ForEVERYGirl: Girl Scouts return donation for important, inspiring reason

Check out what the Girl Scouts of Western Washington are accomplishing!

A brief synopsis of what happened- The Girl Scouts of Western Washington
received a $100,000 donation-an amazing amount of money that can provide a ton of opportunities and resources to the 500+ members of their GSA community

However, this amazing donation had a catch...The donor requested that Girl Scouts not use the money to support transgender girls.
Picture From: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/girl-scouts-is-foreverygirl#/story
The organization politely returned the money to the donor, and have started an INDIEGOGO campaign and social media campaign entitled #ForEVERYGirl in order to raise awareness and show support for ALL girls, as well as to raise the money that they had to give back.
The money will support Girls by sending them to camp, helping to pay for dues, uniforms, membership fees, and a ton of other great programs
For more info about where all of the $$ will go, click here.

In the past three days, Girl Scouts of Western Washington has raised over triple their goal-$308,525!
Use the #ForEVERYGirl on Twitter to show your support or share your story, and click HERE to check out the IndieGoGo page for more info/to donate!

Much love and much support,

Transgender Inclusivity in Girl Scouting

Hey everyone!
Check out this awesome post by A Mighty Girl on Facebook!

Here's the link:

https://www.facebook.com/amightygirl/photos/a.360833590619627.72897.316489315054055/854518217917826/?type=1&fref=nf&pnref=story

This post speaks all about how wonderfully inclusive our organization is!
Transgender rights have become an extremely prevalent topic in the media, in America, and around the world. A large amount of people and organizations have been supportive and positive regarding the transgender community, and Girl Scouts is one such org!

The Girl Scouts of America organization has been inclusive and welcoming to "girls of all kinds for years, including transgender girls." When Girl Scouts' stance on allowing Transgender girls to participate in the organization was called into question, GS reaffirmed its stance.

According to the FB post,  the Chief Girl Expert for Girl Scouts USA-Andrea Bastiani Archibald- stated, “Luckily, we don’t serve our critics. We are proud to serve all girls.”

“We are proud to serve all girls
.”

I was browsing the GS website earlier in search of the organization's official position/statement regarding this topic, and have posted it right below:

Q: What is Girl Scouts' position on serving transgender youth?
A: Girl Scouts is proud to be the premiere leadership organization for girls in the country. Placement of transgender youth is handled on a case-by-case basis, with the welfare and best interests of the child and the members of the troop/group in question a top priority. That said, if the child is recognized by the family and school/community as a girl and lives culturally as a girl, then Girl Scouts is an organization that can serve her in a setting that is both emotionally and physically safe. (info from: http://www.girlscouts.org/program/basics/faith/faqs.asp#a1)

Go Girl Scouts! I am so incredibly proud of our organization's inclusivity and welcoming environment! All girls should have the opportunity to connect to Girl Scout resources, participate in Girl Scouting events, serve their communities, develop their characters and skills, make like-minded friends, and be who they are unapologetically.

"Transphobia, the Girl Scouts know, is simply a form of sexism...

the Girl Scouts will continue to do what it has done for over 100 years: motivate young girls to become strong and confident, and teach them leadership skills to create a better America.” ~Dr. Marcie Bianco<https://www.facebook.com/amightygirl/photos/a.360833590619627.72897.316489315054055/854518217917826/?type=1&fref=nf&pnref=story>

A Mighty Girl's post also includes links to books and valuable resources about The Transgender Community, Girl Scouting History (I prefer the term HERstory :)) , and other books that can introduce young women and younger girls to the concepts discussed in this Blog post.

Laverne Cox is an American actress, reality television star, television producer, and LGBT advocate who speaks out for Transgender people and Trans issues, and has recently gotten the #TransIsBeautiful trending across social media. For more information about this amazing woman and her campaign for inclusivity and equality, check out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laverne_Cox or http://www.lavernecox.com/

Fun Beautification Project

Helllllo everybody!

Hope y'all are having an awesome week! Today I want to talk about a fun troop project/public art piece that's easy, cheap and impactful!

But first, I wanted to give a quick shout out to my new friend Katie from Troop 103!

I met Katie and her troop leaders a few days ago while they were selling Girl Scout cookies to raise money for their troop! It was great to speak to a current Girl Scout about her goals, summer camp and her plans to earn her Silver Award and complete new Journey Projects!

Good luck to Katie and Troop 103-I hope that you complete all of your goals for the year and that you enjoy all of your scouting projects!

Katie and I at her Troop's Cookie Booth
This past week, some of my co-workers and I have been brainstorming fun social projects to get people out of their comfort zones and thinking about the future.

As we were talking, someone brought up a community art project that our school's art gallery put together earlier last year that would be a perfect Girl Scout project!

“Wish Tree for Washington, DC” by Yoko Ono. Photo by Naomi Sachs Published onhttp://www.healinglandscapes.org/blog/2011/08/wordless-wednesday-81711-wishes/wishes2-042-2/

Last year, our gallery provided the campus with hundreds of small paper gift tags, and encouraged students to write down wishes, dreams and goals on the tags. Next, students would tie their wishes to a single tree down in front of the library.

(Found on: http://imaginepeacetower.com/yoko-onos-wish-trees)

The tree was absolutely beautiful! It became covered in the aspirations of undergraduate students, professors, college employees and community members.

People had a lot of amazing things to say! Some wished for world peace and happiness, while others wished for better test grades and positive relationships and friendships.

This art project was created by Yoko Ono, and the instructions are extremely simple:

Wish Piece by Yoko Ono (1996)

Make a wish
Write it down on a piece of paper
Fold it and tie it around a branch of a Wish Tree
Ask your friends to do the same
Keep wishing
Until the branches are covered with wishes

Supplies needed:
  • Paper and/or large gift tags
  • Pens
  • A Hole Punch
  • String
  • Dreams, Goals, Aspirations
  • A Tree (or trees)

You can even make smaller, more personal versions of this project for just your troop, your family or your friends! They can make great party or moving-up-ceremony decorations.

The cool thing about this project is that it can be changed and modified based on your ideas and needs!

Check out this indoor, decorative version:

Hello There Again!

Hey everyone!

Sorry it's been so long (almost a year) since I last posted! Due to the recent popularity of this blog, and my love for all things GSA, I've decided to pick up where I left off and to post more throughout this summer!

As you know from my last post, I was an Orientation Leader at my College this past summer! It was such an amazing experience-I learned so much about myself and my school, and grew a lot as a person. I developed my communication and leadership skills, as well as made a ton of new friends!

I am excited to say that I will be returning to the position once again this summer in order to further my growth as a leader and to go on more adventures!

I have a ton of goals for this next summer, and one of them will be to share some new creative Girl Scouting ideas!

Another one of my goals is to live by one of my favorite Eleanor Roosevelt quotes-"Do one thing everyday that scares you." I think that it's important that one push their limits often and challenge themselves to try new things and to better themselves. :)

Hope you all are having a wonderful May, and that your days are filled with smiles and adventure!

Much Love,

Gold Girl Allie

P.S. Adventure is out there!

P.S.S. Here's a funny little episode of Miss Eleanor Roosevelt on a Game Show!
